If you turn the volume on your computer on, and then look in the upper righthand corner of this site, you will see one of the funniest commercials I've ever seen. In particular, I really like listening to the guy's voice when he talks about 'national tragedy,' because of the way he has to carefully balance solemn respect and enough excitement to keep the listener in 'buy stuff' mode.* Also, I sort of want to buy one.
*This was not deserving of a spoiler alert. |

This looks like an interesting book, if you're interested in American Political History. I think that Bob Shrum brought up that campaign when he was asked on the Daily Show if he had ever run a campaign knowing that he would lose. |

Ron Paul's diag appearance conflicts with the Jeff Toobin thing at Borders, so I guess I'll have to wait a little longer to see someone run for president. If you have the time (and access), you should read Ex Parte Medellin (the 2006 one). The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals goes through the most hilarious contortion to claim that President Bush is acting at the low ebb of Justice Jackson's Executive Power. They go through some fun hoops to disregard an executive order. The appeal is being argued in front of the US Supreme Court tomorrow at 10. I was amused. |

I hadn't listened to this song in awhile. Every once in awhile I hear it again. I've known it for a long time, but it strikes me how whenever I hear it, it's very good, very relevant, and its ideas are very valuable. I think I've shared it here before, but now I'm going to share it again. Enjoy. ( Read more... ) |

Frank Rich, generally, writes rather good columns. I think that this is why he gets to write for the NYTimes. This week, though, his column was particularly rather good. I recommend it. He is a very good writer. |

Almost 2 weeks ago, I said that I thought I knew who was going to be the Republican nominee. In a similar vein to that revelation, today was the day that John McCain lost his role as a contender. He had been well known for always being the candidate who would answer questions, Straight Talk Express and all. Yesterday (Or today, I don't know), he wouldn't answer questions about how he felt about the immigration bill dying. I'm sure he was very sincere, that he honestly didn't have anything to say about it, but I think it signals the end.
Bret, at some point, I'd it if you could take the time to explain the Alternative Minimum Tax to me. It seems important, and I don't understand it, and I bet you do. Thanks.

I go to Dunking Donuts sometimes for coffee. They ask "Cream and Sugar?" and I say "Yes." Then, a few minutes later, I have coffee. The coffee always has a strange taste, and they never let you see them put it in the cup, but it always looks like they're doing something more complex than adding cream and sugar, which makes me think that they are added via magic. That makes it harder to explain the sugar grains on my cup tonight, though. There are some games that I never played, but wanted to play, solely because the cuts scenes from them used in AMVs looked cool. There is one in particular that's doing it to Kingdom Hearts II, right now. Pirates wasn't great, but was better than expected, especially if you ignore the first half, which didn't appear to even be trying to make sense. Also, there were themes, which is always nice. You have to understand why you're doing something. I should give Matt Stoker a call.

Jon Stewart just got done interviewing Reza Aslan. At least, the interview just got done being broadcast. I had heard of Reza Aslan before, but couldn't have told you who he was. If you missed the interview, you should find it on the internet. It was very, very, very interesting. Also, for Bret, the episode opened with a Baltimore joke, though by telling you that, I've already ruined the punchline. Sorry. Very good to watch. |

I have about 48 hours to study (I'll need to sleep well Wednesday night). Thursday, at noon, the Paper Chase ends. A new one will begin shortly thereafter. Omri, though, was a much cooler guy than the guy from the movie. that guy was a dick. It's thundering, and that's awesome. I hope it keeps going all night. If anyone wants to get breakfast tomorrow, like Pancakes or something, give me a call.

I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock, and went to turn it off. It's been dry out, and there's a lot of friction when you get out of bed, so apparently I had built up a static charge. When I tried to press the button to turn the alarm off, I accidentally touched the speaker, and felt a shock. The clock's display went dead, and this tiny, dying noise came from the speakers for a second or two, then they went quiet. In short, I killed my alarm clock. I really liked that clock: it served me faithfully for many years, and was consistently able to wake me without bothering the people I live with. Now...well, I'm not really sure how I'll wake up.

I can think of about 2 intelligent things I've ever read in the Michigan Daily. Despite the fact that it's a very cursory, brief, just-scratch-the-surface glance at the topic, it is, in my opinion, quite interesting. This ranks as one of those 2 intelligent things. |

[Nov. 8th, 2006|10:05 am] |

Counting Conrad Burns and George Allen out (which I am prepared to do at this point), the only seriously contested senate race that the Republicans won was an open seat. Wherever voters had a chance to kick out a Republican incumbent, they seem to have exercised that right, but in Tennessee, they were willing to give Corker a chance, because he hadn't had one yet. The other contested open seat, Maryland, went to the Democrats. |

NPR just called Missouri for McCaskill. I'm saying that Webb's lead is big enough that I don't think a recount will hurt it (though I stand by my statement that it's not over till it's over.) Also, upon hearing more of what Ms. Pelosi said when the democrats picked up the 15th seat, I have many less reservations about her being speaker than I did before. I still hope that Mr. Emanuel can find a future in the party much larger than his own district.

| Update |
[Nov. 8th, 2006|12:07 am] |
Midnight: The democrats are between 38 and 40 seats up, though that number will be down by the end of the night. Webb is currently up 2500, with 1% of precincts left. It will get recounted, but I'm extremely cautiously optimistic. I'm between 5% and 15% done with my essay for Thursday. I should try very hard to sleep tonight, because I won't get to tomorrow. ahe dems picked up not one, but two seats in New Hampshire. That's pretty big.

You know what would be great if it existed? Google Mind. It's an application where you can just enter a term or idea, and it will search your thoughts and memory and show you all the places it shows up (pageranked, of course). That way, when something seems familiar to you, and you can't figure out why, you can just have google wrack your brain until it figures it out. Someone should make that.

You know what's great: not knowing much about baseball, and thus not knowing what a homerun looks like, and thus getting to enjoy for a second more than anyone else the suspense over whether or not Detroit was going to the world series. You know what's great: taking a walk around campus, and managing to actually walk all the sickness you've been feeling for a week away. You know what's great: Neither Bob Seger nor the Lemonheads had put out albums for a decade, but they both released music this past september. You know what's great: |

Today an actual human being with a heart and blood said this: "And for the bonus, this is probably the hardest question I've ever asked at trivia: What is the Konami Code, as seen in games such as Contra?" Now, I'll admit, it was slightly faster for me because I had just talked to Bryan about it yesterday. It was still in RAM. Also, sorry about the Sweden question. I got Gotheberg and Orebro confused. That said, if you look up 'canal' in an online Swedish-English dictionary, Gota is not a word that it will return.
